The mission of Portland Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Department is to enhance the quality of life through people, parks, and programming while creating lasting memories for the people of Portland and its visitors.

The Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Department is made up of a team of 160 full-time staff, and 250+ seasonal and on-call staff who work together to improve the quality of life in Portland, Maine.

Our staff creates opportunities for social connection and community development by operating and programming our City cultural venues such as Merrill Auditorium and Portland Expo, and running community programs such as our popular Before and After School programs, Swim Lessons, Basketball Leagues, Therapeutic Recreation, and Senior Adult programs. By maintaining our City public buildings, waterfront infrastructure, piers, and our network of 70 parks, 40+ miles of trails, 13 Cemeteries, and 30 playgrounds, we provide places where people can come to connect, exercise, recreate, and create community. Our staff operates community centers, pools, Portland Skatepark, Riverside Golf Course, Troubh Ice Arena, and 2 municipal stadiums where we host youth and adult sports, 3 minor league sports teams, and community events.

Our team of staff is comprised of Park Maintainers and Lifeguards, Event Managers and Child Care Workers, Horticulturalists and Arborists, Food Service Workers and Ice Arena Operators, Park Rangers and Project Managers, Golf Pros and Custodians, Referees and Electricians, Coaches and Trades Workers, Playground Technicians and Plow Operators, Cemetery Maintainers and Theater Techs, along with support staff in Human Resources, Finance, and Admin. Even though the job titles and tasks of our individual staff members vary widely, we all work side by side, day in and day out, to make Portland a better place to live and visit.

Job Summary:

The City of Portland Aquatics Division is offering a creative opportunity to engage with the community and make a difference as an Aquatics Programmer II. The Aquatic Programmer II performs aquatic work in the delivery and monitoring of aquatic classes and programs at the City of Portland’s aquatic facilities. This position involves promoting and enforcing water safety. This position is responsible for instruction, direct participation, and contact with the public, school staff, community groups and other aquatic staff during aquatic programming and lessons.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Plans, conducts, organizes and promotes classes or programs in specialty areas such as swimming, lifeguarding, water safety, special age group work, etc.
• Participates in the planning and development of new programs and classes.
• Maintains order and discipline to ensure a safe and positive environment.
• May supervise and train personnel (paid or volunteers) assigned to assist in specialty classes or programs, and provide education and training in the area of water safety to qualified members of the public.
• Collects fees and charges, maintains records, and uses computer systems to create and manage program and attendance reports.
• Maintains equipment and facilities; distributes materials and supplies necessary to aquatic programming; maintains inventory of equipment; maintains records on various programs and lessons.
• Participate and engage with the diverse population in aquatic facilities.
• Work requires the use of independent judgment and initiative.

Required Skills & Experience:

• Experience working with children, teens, adults in an aquatic facility.
• Experience or training in aquatics, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities.
• Ability to organize, lead, teach and instruct a variety of group activities.
• Knowledge and ability to instruct a specific skill or skills as required.
• Knowledge of the basic philosophy of recreation.
• Ability and willingness to perform emergency First Aid, CPR/AED, and water rescues as needed, within the specific limitations of the certification.
• Ability to maintain order and enforce rules and regulations and to impart enthusiasm in a positive and productive atmosphere.

Necessary Special Requirements:

• Must have and maintain American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification.
• Must have and maintain American Red Cross Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid Certification

Expected Hours/Schedule:

Various scheduling opportunities including early mornings, evenings and weekend swim sessions.

Salary & Benefits:

This is a union position - CEBA, Grade 9 – Salary rate starting at $22.00/hour.
