We are hiring a Systems Operator II in the Public Services Department, Wastewater Division.

The Systems Operator II is an entry-level position responsible for assisting in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the City of Westbrook’s wastewater collection system and pumping stations. The position supports regulatory compliance, emergency response, preventative maintenance, and snow and ice operations, while providing professional customer service and contributing to the efficient operation of the Wastewater Division.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the operation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of the City’s wastewater collection systems and pumping stations.
  • Perform preventative maintenance activities to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of wastewater infrastructure.
  • Learn to safely operate and maintain equipment including vacuum trucks, sewer cleaning equipment, pumps, hand and power tools, heavy trucks, snowplows, and other specialized equipment.
  • Assist with cleaning, inspection, repair, and replacement of wastewater collection system components.
  • Participate in snow plowing and snow removal operations.
  • Participate in the division’s emergency standby/on-call rotation, responding to emergencies and performing required weekend station checks.
  • Performs other related duties and projects as assigned.

Education and Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid State of Maine Driver’s License, with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to obtain a Class II NEWEA Voluntary Collection Systems License within one (1) year of employment.
  • Ability to obtain a State of Maine Class B (CDL) Driver’s license with air brake and tanker endorsements within six (6) months of employment.
  • Ability to obtain First Aid, CPR, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certification within required timeframe set by Wastewater Supervisor.
  • Previous experience in wastewater operations, public works, utilities, construction, mechanical maintenance, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment, commercial vehicles, or municipal maintenance equipment preferred.
  • Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), SCADA systems, or asset management software preferred.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the primary duties and responsibilities may be considered.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Competitive salary range of $28.61 - $33.55 per hour, based on experience.
  • This position is covered by the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement, available on our website.

About the City of Westbrook:

The City of Westbrook was a traditional mill city that has grown and diversified significantly over the last two decades to become a residential hub and business center for the region. Westbrook has a population of over 20,000 and covers 17.36 square miles. Westbrook is centrally located to both urban and rural amenities. The Public Services Department ensures the safe and efficient operation of municipal service systems that enhance the quality of life in Westbrook. It is responsible for the construction, operation, and maintenance of drainage systems, waste management services, and municipal properties. Public Services also manages roadside mowing, street and sidewalk maintenance, snow and ice removal, and seasonal cleanups. The department plays a key role in ensuring public safety, environmental sustainability, and the maintenance of infrastructure. Public Services collaborates with other City departments to respond to emergencies and maintain citywide services. The department is staffed by 35 full-time employees.
