Position:                    Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator **The start date for this position is anticipated to be mid-November** 

FLSA Status:            Full-Time/Non-Exempt Position

Pay Range:                $27.70 (plus stipends, as applicable).  The Town reserves the right to provide time in service/longevity pay adjustments and vacation accruals for a hired candidate with approved wastewater experience.

JOB GOAL: Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled technical and maintenance work in the operation, maintenance and repair of wastewater treatment facilities and systems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Monitors the performance of all equipment, gauges and charts in the treatment plant and pump stations; Records statistical data concerning plant operations; Maintains, operates, repairs and replaces equipment as necessary; Charts lab test results for trend analysis and maintains accurate records of analyses and test results; evaluates data and writes reports as required.
• Operates, maintains and repairs malfunctions at the wastewater treatment plant, repairs gauges, pumps, filters and other controls and equipment.
• Collects samples and identifies concentrations of chemical, physical or biological characteristics of wastewater required in accordance with local, state and federal requirements; Gathers and tests wastewater samples for plant efficiency reports as required.
• Performs quality control tests on lab equipment and lab analyses; evaluates procedures and results for accuracy and determines appropriate methods.
• Assures that plant operates within required standards.
• Calibrates, modifies or repairs instrumentation and control equipment including recorders, flow meter and other water quality monitoring equipment.
• Operates and maintains sewage pump stations; cleans wet wells and operates pumps and valves to control and adjust flow and treatment process. 
• Operates and maintains all aspects of the sewer collection system.
• Once trained, the employee will be expected to operate a Front-End Loader, Vacuum Truck, Sewer Jetter, and other various equipment related to a Sewer Treatment Facility and Collection System.
• Employee may occasionally be assigned to winter or emergency highway operations.
• Must have availability for weekend and/or on-call duties.  The rotating on-call schedule is a five-person rotation, one (1) week on/four (4) weeks off.
• Performs other work duties as assigned or required.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

1. Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.  Two (2) years post-secondary college or technical training in biology, environmental science, chemistry, construction, electrical, or a closely related field, and
2. Two (2) years of experience in a wastewater utility, or
3. Any equivalent combination of related education and experience required.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. Working knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in wastewater treatment plant maintenance and operation activities; working knowledge of laboratory procedures and practices.
2. Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment.
3. Ability to: perform process control calculations; to work safely; to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
4. Strong time management and prioritization skills.
5. Demonstrated problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
6. Strong customer service skills. 
7. Demonstrated ability to work independently and/or as part of a team.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Valid State of Maine Class A Commercial Driver’s License, or ability to attain within a specified timeline following hire. 
• State of Maine Grade I Wastewater Treatment Plant License required, or ability to attain within a specified timeline following hire. 
• Applicants who do not currently hold the licenses listed above are encouraged to apply. Training and support will be provided to help employees obtain required licensures within an applicable timeframe following hire. 

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week. Monday through Thursday (6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday).  This position will have rotating weekend and holiday coverage, as well as on-call duties.
