Typical Pay for a Grade II Wastewater Operator in Maine

For smaller municipalities and districts:

Grade II Operator:

$24 – $32 per hour
Which equals roughly $50,000 – $65,000 per year.

That’s based on:

  • Maine Rural Water postings
  • MMA listings
  • MEWEA job board data
  • Actual small-district pay structures

Grade II Superintendent (Small System)

When someone is BOTH:

  • A Grade II operator
  • AND the “de facto” superintendent
  • AND responsible for treatment, pump stations, collections, compliance, maintenance, and call-outs

Typical Maine pay is:

$65,000 – $85,000 per year

This range matches:

  • Towns under 2,000 population

  • Districts where the superintendent is hands-on, not administrative

Higher ranges ($90,000+) are generally for Grade III/IV, larger systems, or systems with heavy permitting and more staffing.
