General Description

The Operator supports the daily operations and maintenance of the Veazie Sewer District’s Grade II wastewater treatment facility, a three-cell aerated lagoon system serving approximately 2,000 residents. Under the direct supervision of the Chief Operator or Superintendent, the Operator assists with equipment monitoring, routine maintenance, and operational tasks while receiving mentorship and training to develop the skills necessary to obtain a Maine Grade I or II Wastewater Treatment Operator License.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with overseeing daily operations of the lagoon system, including monitoring aerators, pumps, and flow rates
• Assist with monitoring aerators, pumps, lagoon conditions, and flow levels
• Support the maintenance and cleaning of equipment, buildings, and facility grounds
• Perform inspections of pipelines and pump stations as directed
• Assist with the collection of samples for laboratory analysis
• Help maintain accurate logs, daily reports, and equipment records
• Respond to alarms or emergency situations under supervision
• Participate in on-call rotation as scheduled
• Attend training sessions and pursue coursework toward licensure
• Follow safety procedures and participate in safety drills
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Operator / Interim Superintendent

Work Experience Requirements

• No prior wastewater experience required;
• Experience with mechanical systems or fieldwork preferred
• Willingness to learn and follow standard operating procedures
• Ability to work as part of a small team and follow direction
• Proficiency with basic computer tasks and Microsoft 365
• Valid Maine driver’s license and reliable transportation

Education Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required;

Physical and Environmental Requirements

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
• Ability to climb ladders, enter confined spaces, and work outdoors in all weather conditions
• Must be able to respond during off-hours when on call
