The Kennebec Sanitary Treatment District is a Grade V regional activated wastewater treatment facility with a capacity of 12.7 million gallons per day, is seeking a full-time Maintenance Mechanic to help protect the health of our communities and the Kennebec River.

What You’ll Do:
No two days are exactly alike. In this role, you will support the maintenance, repair, and operation of the District’s facilities and equipment, including:
- Performing preventative and corrective maintenance on mechanical equipment, vehicles, and infrastructure across the treatment plant, pump stations, and interceptor system
- Assisting with fabrication, pipe fitting, welding, and general shop work using specialized tools and equipment.
- Operating District vehicles, heavy equipment, and power tools for maintenance, groundskeeping, and snow removal activities.
- Supporting work on buildings, grounds, and collection systems, including confined space entry and adherence to strict safety protocols.
- Assisting with inspections, operational checks, and recordkeeping related to equipment maintenance and performance.
- Responding to emergency call-ins, equipment failures, and assisting in restoring normal operations.
- Maintaining a safe, clean, and organized work environment and contributing to overall facility upkeep.
- Working independently or as part of a team, and occasionally providing direction to helpers or laborers as assigned.
- Participate in the weekly on-call & weekend duty rotation upon obtaining Grade 2 – Maine Wastewater Operator Certification.
What You’ll Bring:
- A high school diploma or equivalent
- Experience with mechanical systems, equipment maintenance, or fabrication tools (machine shop, welding, or pipe fitting experience preferred)
- Ability to interpret process data and make informed decisions
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain accurate maintenance records
- Familiarity with hand and power tools, heavy equipment, and general construction or maintenance practices
- Strong work ethic with the ability to work independently or collaboratively with a team.
- Basic smartphone & computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Physical readiness for the job: lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing ladders, and confined space entry
What We Provide:

- Grade 2 – Maine Wastewater Operator Certification – must be obtained within 6 months (we’ll help with that!)
- Competitive base hourly rate: $25.23-$31.37/hour, based on experience and qualifications. Additional hourly stipends for operator certification!
